Recessed Spot Lights
Recessed spot lights have become extremely popular in recent years and it is not difficult to see why. Such fittings provide a contemporary and unobtrusive lighting solution and, if correctly installed in the right numbers, produce the required level of illumination shadow free. Recessed downlights can be used effectively in any room and are particularly suitable for kitchens and bathrooms where a clean finish and less ornamented approach can be required.
LED or Halogen?
In choosing your spot lights you must decide whether LED or Halogen bulbs are best for your particular needs. LED lamps use less energy and have a longer life but they emit less light than halogen lamps and so more fittings will be required. If you wish to have the ability to dim your lights then remember that fitting dimmers for LED's can be difficult and very costly.
The Low Voltage Option
Many of the downlights you will see are low voltage. This can be a confusing term as low voltage is not the same thing as low energy. Low voltage fittings will produce crisper light and will have longer lives but they generate a lot of heat and require the fitting of a transformer. Low voltage lights actually use more energy and so are more costly to run.
How Many?
This is probably the greatest area of confusion. Achieving the desired result with spot lights is all about installing the right number of fittings. Halogen lamps should be positioned 1.6m - 2m part in all directions with lamps being around 0.8m from the walls of the room. LED lamps emit less light and so should be positioned 1.3 1.7m apart and 0.8m from the walls.
Fixed or Pivot?
Fixed downlights have lamps which do not move and which point directly downwards. These are perfectly adequate for most situations. However, if your room is an awkward shape, has dark corners, recesses or a feature that you would particularly like to accent then pivoting lamps would be a wise investment. Here the lamps can be swivelled to focus on the desired area and to direct the light to where it is most needed.
